A brief overview of Arranged Marriage:
In India, an arranged marriage is viewed as an
act of love. Although foreign to most of the western
world, arranged marriage statistics show that this type of union is often more
successful than those we typically see. Common in India, Africa and in some
parts of the Middle East, arranged marriages are decided by family members
rather than by two people organically. Arranged marriage by definition is
exactly what it says to be: arranged. This means there is not much choice in the
matter. The idea of arranged marriage is an ancient practice that is still done
for social, economic and religious reasons. My partner and I chose this topic
because there is typically a negative connotation towards the words arranged
marriage and a lot to be learned about the benefits and tragedies associated
with this type of marriage. Through extensive research and forming our own
opinions we have come to see both the positives and negatives of this topic.
Here is an image of a couple just married, after a traditional Indian marriage ceremony. Elaborate ceremonies like the one in the picture here have been practiced for thousands of years.
