ONLINE DATING vs. ARRANGED MARRIAGE: IS THERE A
DIFFERENCE?
In this current year, 2013, it is completely
common to belong to a website with the name of match.com or christianmingle.com.
Online dating is something that many couples have benefitted from and have
produced successful happy relationships. The same can be said for arranged
marriage, depending on who you ask. An example of a happy couple would be Ms.
Israni, now Mrs. Khubani and Mr. Khubani. A.J Khubani was set up with Ms. Israni
who was miles away. Their parents encouraged them both to meet and they both
agreed it was not love at first sight. A.J Khubani became ill and when Mrs.
Khubani showed her grace and loyalty to him by remaining by his side in the
hospital A.J said he fell in love with her. 27 years later they are still
happily married.
You might think, now how does arranged marriage even relate to online dating? Well, think of match.com. You fill out your profile as to what you are like- personality wise, interests, and
education. Then the website pairs you up with people based on common interests.
Dating proceeds and from then on you can either meet the man or woman of your
dreams or just enjoy a few fun dates. Now think of arranged marriages. Your
parents pick your partners, keeping in mind your personality, and then their
expectations of the people they want their kin to be with. You go on a
(supervised) date, and if things click you have yourself a match! It’s all about
what works best for the couple and in arranged marriages what also works best
for the family. So when you think of online dating, is it that farfetched from
arranged marriage? Funny how the ancient practice of arranged marriage repeats
itself in modern day times.
Here is a couple who is happily married from a traditional marriage, with traditional outfits.
