Here is a cartoon of two people split up symbolizing divorce. You can tell by their expressions that they are unhappy with this situation.
To many westerners, divorce isn’t uncommon. Your best friend, your
classmate, your teacher, even you yourself may have fallen victim to some
repercussion of divorce. Perhaps your parents have gotten divorced, you have
gotten divorced or you know someone who is divorced. Regardless, it’s not
uncommon. The startling statistic I myself have just discovered is that 40-50%
of U.S marriages end in divorce. Arranged Marriages are not common in the U.S,
however they occur in 90% of Indian marriages, and yet somehow the divorce rate
in India is a mere 1.1%. Although it can be argued that divorce is frowned upon
and not an accepted practice in Southern Asia, you cannot deny the astonishing
statistic differences.
Arranged marriages are a result of an ancient traditional practice that
is not only accepted, but more common than not in India. The opposite of
arranged marriages are called love marriages, which is what is practiced in the
US. It is customary in arranged marriages to not know the person you are getting
married to, but instead to learn to love them and endure the new trials and
tribulations that may occur as a new married couple. Where as compared to love
marriages, you first fall in love and get to know the person you are with
before tying the knot. Overall it is up to hard work, trust and compromise to
make a marriage work in the end. Whether it be love marriage or arranged
marriage, sometimes the unfortunate occurs and you have to deal with divorce
one step at a time. Comparing the divorce rates between the US and India there
are some serious differences. However this does not point to which form of
marriage is better because in the end love is what makes the world go
around!
