Worldwide, a girl under the age of 18 is getting married. In India, 90% of these marriages
are arranged from parents. This has been a part of indian culture since the
fourth century. Thousands of Indians have been selected a partner by their
parents and had no choice but to do as they say. Arranged marriage began as a
way of bringing together upper class families as time went on. The arranged
marriage system eventually spread throughout the country and dispersed
throughout the lower classes. Lower classes having the same intentions as the
upper classes did.
Arranged marriage originated from Prakasa, a concept of kashmiri shaiva (a group of
religious traditions). This group, back in the fourth century, stated that
arranged marriage served six actions in the Indian community. Arranged marriage
began because this group believed it helps maintain the social satisfaction in
the society; allows parents to have control over their offspring; amplifies the
chance to continue the ancestral lineage; chance to strengthen and continue
Indian ways; allows extension of family property; and enables the elders to keep
the principle of endogamy, which is marriage within a specific social unit.
Here is an image of two hands symbolizing a traditional Indian marriage. One
hand is the females, which you can tell by her gold bangles, and the other hand
is the male.
